Equatorial Guinea Participates in FAO's Regional Conference for Africa 2012
The
Republic of Congo recently hosted the Regional Conference for Africa of the
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations April 23-27, 2012.
The conference was attended by the ministers of more than 35 different African
countries, including Equatorial Guinea.
The
conference was a unique opportunity to reflect on the state of agriculture in
Africa, the challenges it faces, and the eradication of hunger in the region.
Additional observers included regional and international agriculture officials.
The
Vice Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of Equatorial Guinea, Sergio Osa
Mongomo, was present, along with the Representative of the Permanent Mission of
Equatorial Guinea at the FAO, Crisantos Obama Ondo. While at the meeting, the
delegation of Equatorial Guinea stressed the importance of combined efforts
between the FAO and Equatorial Guinea.
Graziano da Silva, the newly appointed Director-General of
the FAO, said that African oil-producing nations have a great opportunity to promote
the continent's social and economic development and lift it out of its
continuing food insecurity situation.
The
Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Nguema
Obiang Mangue, although not present at the conference, recently made statements
regarding the issue, "Equatorial Guinea is committed to improving food
security for its people and for the region. We are currently implementing
government programs that will both ensure the increasing development of
intra-African trade and help local communities prosper."
Equatorial Guinea is currently working to reform its legal and regulatory fabric to attract private investment that will spur the development of the agriculture sector.
